Burnout In Sports Psychology






Burnout is defined by sport psychologists as “physical/emotional exhaustion, sport devaluation, and reduced athletic accomplishment” (1). this is an important issue in youth sports because it is thought to contribute to dropping out of sports altogether.. Athlete burnout is a cognitive-affective syndrome characterized by perceptions of emotional and physical exhaustion, reduced accomplishment, and devaluation of sport. a variety of theoretical conceptualizations are utilized to understand athlete burnout, including stress-based models, theories of identity, control and commitment, and motivational models.. Burnout in athletes is thought to negatively influence the quality of their sport experiences, leading to decreased performance and ultimately discontinuing sport participation (17). moreover, burnout is thought to negatively impact athletes’ well being both physically and mentally..
